PORVORIM: Barely hours after the Calvim-Carona bridge was inaugurated on Sunday, miscreants damaged the name plaque at the bridge.
In his complaint, Aldona Panch Jerry Noronha told Mapusa Police that some persons damaged the plaque laid at the entrance of the new Carona-Calvim Bridge. A Mapusa police team rushed to the spot and enquired about the incident with the security guard on duty.
According to reliable sources, the security guard told the police that about 10 persons on motorcycles were seen on the bridge at about 1 am, after the inaugural function and they damaged the plaque and fled from the site. Since it was raining, he could not note down the registration numbers of the two-wheelers. Mapusa Police is investigating the case.
Meanwhile, Aldona Panchayat on Monday passed a resolution congratulating Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for honouring his promise and completing the Carona-Calvim Bridge.
The panchayat, however, registered its protest against Goa Infrastructural Development Corporation for not officially inviting the panchayat members to the function.
“The GSIDC inaugurated the bridge after bypassing the panchayat members. During the ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the bridge, the welcome address was delivered by the sarpanch and the panchas were offered a place on the dais. But during the function to inaugurate the bridge on Sunday, the panchayat members were ignored totally,” complained Deputy Sarpanch Charudatt Panjiker.
However, Panch Noronha said a representative of Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo had gone to the panchayat office with the invitation on Saturday, but the panchayat office was closed that day.
“The invitation was placed on the latch of the door. Later, Ticlo’s personal assistant informed the deputy sarpanch about the invitation and requested him to inform all the panchas,” said Noronha.
