PANJIM: A green campaign is underway in the capital city where residents have been planting tree saplings across Panjim. A large number of trees have already been planted in various parts of the city.

Most of these saplings have been planted in front of the houses of residents, based on their request to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP). Others have also come forward to plant tree saplings in front of the premises of their establishments based in Panjim.
While CCP Commissioner Agnelo Fernandes has been coordinating these requests, like-minded organisations have also been involved in such activities.
It may be recalled that the CCP along with such groups had replanted the 75-year-old tree on the 18th June Road that had uprooted near the Gujarat Lodge after the cyclone. The CCP had also planted a tree sapling at the spot outside ICICI Bank, where a huge tree got uprooted during the monsoons recently.
“We are helping all to replant their trees which have fallen and have life. We are also planting new trees and taking saplings from the Forest Department. We are associating with whoever is approaching us to plant or replant trees,” said Panjim Deputy Mayor Vasant Agshikar.
On another note, regarding Ganesh Chaturthi, the Deputy Mayor claimed that for the first time, all the immersion/visarjan points in Panjim had been brightly decorated. Ferry boat arrangements were also provided where the Ganpati idols were immersed in the middle of Mandovi River.
