PANJIM: Three days after a Hyderabad youth’s suspected drug related death, Goa Tourism Development Corporation has said it cannot monitor every tourist entering the State.
Shashank Sharma from Hyderabad, who was holidaying in Goa died on Sunday due to a suspected drug overdose at Anjuna beach in North Goa.
“Incidents like death due to drug overdose should not happen. I accept the fact that it should not happen and precautions should be taken. But you cannot monitor every single person coming to Goa. Humanly, it is not possible,” GTDC chairman Nilesh Cabral said on Wednesday.
He said that when tourists entering the State are five to six times the population these things happen. “These things happen in every tourism country or state. We need to control it though,” he said.
Cabral, who was recently elevated as the Power Minister claimed that he does not have details about the incident. “I don’t want to talk about the incident because I don’t know details. We are getting tourists six times more than our population. Such incidents don’t happen only in Goa but any tourist destination has this type of problems,” he said.
Cabral said that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has “tightened noose around the drug racket in a big way”. “May be there are some small instances (of drug selling) which are remaining,” he added and said the State is trying ways to stop the drug menace.
