MARGAO: Differences have cropped up in the Goan Seamen Association of India over extending support to the BJP in the April 12 Lok Sabha elections.
Ex-Secretary GSAI Michael Benny Da Costa has called for a general body meeting of the organisation to take opinion of the members before taking a stand on supporting a particular party or candidate. He has asked GSAI president Dixon Vaz to call the general body meeting on April 5 to take the decision, even as he said that Vaz has imposed the decision to support the BJP on the members.
Incidentally, GSAI executive committee, which had an emergency meeting this evening, has turned down Benny’s request to call the general body meeting saying the request does not conform to clause 5.3 of the memorandum. “To apply for the general body meeting, the application should be addressed to the managing committee and must be signed by ten members who have paid their subscription upto date”, GSAI president Dixon said, while reminding Benny that he was very much present at the meeting which took the decision to support the BJP government.
Dixon pointed out that the GSAI executive committee had decided to support the BJP in the coming election because of the pension scheme for seafarers and their widows started by the Parrikar regime.
