PANJIM: While the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will be augmenting infrastructure for Goa Medical College, Bambolim, the Corporation has now been entrusted with the task for undertaking all maintenance works on the hospital building as well as the new additions starting January 1, 2014.
The Corporation which has begun a couple of maintenance works at the hospital complex already, would be taking on the entire task of maintaining the hospital infrastructure even before this year ends.
Dissatisfied with the maintenance works being presently carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD), the government and health ministry has decided that this task be taken over by the GSIDC on a permanent basis.
While the cost for maintenance works at GMC has run into crores of rupees over the years with little or no improvement, sources in the health ministry say that the GSIDC would provide better maintenance from civil works to civic systems.
According to officials in the GSIDC, the maintenance works would include all civil, electrical, plumbing, upkeep of operating theatres, chillers, air conditioning, fire fighting equipment, medical gases and a host of other works within and outside the hospital blocks.
Managing Director of GSIDC Sanjit Rodrigues said, “We have started taking over certain works in a phased manner and by the year end we will be geared up to taken on full-fledged maintenance of GMC.” Repairs on the 450 bedded medicine ward has already begun and the Corporation plans on setting up a GMC maintenance cell which will work round the clock. The maintenance works would also include waste management systems and upgradation of existing facilities for proper collection, segregation and disposal of medical waste and other waste.
Rodrigues said that the GSIDC will study the existing disposal of medical waste through incineration and may also consider adding more equipment for this purpose.
The Corporation is in the process of completing the Cath lab at GMC and its maintenance would be taken care of by the Corporation. Presently the GSIDC is also maintaining the new hospitals constructed by it at Ponda (Sub-District) and Mapusa (Asilo).
