PANJIM: Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane stunned the Assembly Tuesday when he said he was ‘frightened’ to visit Calangute beach in the present circumstances.
Rane was however quick to clarify that his fear follows a series of crackdowns on sleazy brothels which have raised apprehensions of such illegal trade rampant along the coastal belt.
“Calangute has become notorious….so many prostitution cases have been cracked,” he commented while speaking during the demands for grants for Police Departmen.
The former chief minister though clarified that he has nothing against the local MLA Michael Lobo, who, Rane said, is investing money to cleanse and upgrade the popular tourist location.
“Calangute is a beautiful beach but such activities (prostitution and other criminal activities) are bringing a bad name (to the place). I would go to this place, but now I get frightened. I wonder when I come across some activity, ‘what is he doing here?” he said bringing laughter among the legislators.
On a serious note, he said that tourists do not prefer visiting ‘notorious’ places and that efforts should be made to bring good tourists to Calangute and to Goa.
