PANJIM: National Green Tribunal has directed the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest not to reduce the eco-sensitive zones within the Wetsern Ghats that were declared based on the Kasturingan Report in the 2017 notification.
The green tribunal has asked the authorities to come up with a new notification within six months as the existing notification expired last month. However, in the meantime, activities not permitted within eco-sensitive zones should not be allowed, the order said.
Referring to the recent Kerala floods and ecologically fragile nature of the ghats, NGT made it clear that the eco-sensitive zones declared in the previous notification should not be reduced in anyway.
