MARGAO: Maina Curtorim police have registered a case of chain snatching and though the culprit was taken into custody he has not been arrested as he is presently undergoing treatment at Hospicio to recover from the thrashing the public gave him.
On Tuesday evening at around 6 pm 21-year-old Nisha Noronha was returning to her house at Raia from her classes at Multipurpose Margao when a person arrived on a motorcycle and snatched her chain. As she screamed, people gathered even as the thief tried to escape.
However, he slipped and fell in a field that was mucky and the villagers grabbed him and gave him a sound thrashing. Police were informed about the incident at around 6.30 and they rushed to the site and took custody of the thief.
However, since he was badly beaten up by the crowd, he was referred to Hospicio where he is undergoing treatment. As he cannot speak properly the police have his name as Sumanna from Nepal and he is believed to be around 25 years old.
A case under sections 356 and 379 of Indian Penal Code for theft has been registered against him.
