MARGAO: Goencho Avaaz on Saturday organised a programme where its volunteers and school children cleaned a field at Bandar Arossim, next to Park Hyatt Hotel to prepare it for mechanised transplantation of paddy crop.
The programme was organised to not only highlight the importance of agriculture but also to emphasise the need to preserve Goan culture, tradition, heritage and also to connect with nature.
Around 30 students of Marina English High School from Verna enthusiastically participated in the programme and were seen very carefully and meticulously picking up the weeds from the fields.
Organised by Goencho Avaaz in association with villagers of Cansaulim, Cuelim, Arossim and Velsao, it was spearheaded by Revolutionary Goans who guided the participants in what should be done. Manoj Parab of Revolutionary Goans explained to all the need to change the lifestyle and go back to being natural and asked to consider farming as a career using modern technology to boost production.
Goencho Avaaz explained to students how nature was being destroyed with fields and mountains damaged which was causing natural calamities and even global warming that was in turn leading to rise in sea level.
Villagers of Cansaulim, Velsao, Arossim and Cuelim led by Viana Fernandes made all the arrangements and also provided ‘pez’ along with pickle to go with it thus giving the participants a feel of Goa a few years back.
Incidentally, the field cleaned belongs to Piedade and Remediana Gomes and admeasures 4,800 sq mts. Jaya paddy will be grown in the cleaned field by Fr George through mechanised transplanting.
