Locals upset as drain leading to Baina beach not desilted for years

VASCO: Baina residents have expressed annoyance as the drain passing from the Baina Youth Recreation Club to the beach has not been desilted for the last few years. Incidentally, the foundation stone was laid five years ago for desilting and reconstruction of the same drain.

The waste water flows from Baina Youth Recreation Club to Baina beach and many households release waste water into this drain, making it a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Locals had demanded immediate reconstruction of the drain.

Accordingly, on March 23, 2018, then water resource minister Vinod Palyekar along with MLAs Carlos Almeida and Milind Naik had laid the foundation stone for desilting and reconstruction work. Locals say that things haven’t moved beyond the stone laying ceremony.

Let alone reconstruction, even the desilting work hasn’t been initiated by the department concerned. After a few locals expressed their problems, local Mormugao Municipal Council Councillor Girish Borkar decided to desilt the drain on his own.
