Officials clueless about effects of lose statements: Bonifacio

Statements by ministers in the recent past should have been avoided. Tourism is a sensitive industry; effects of statement will be known once season commences

PANJIM: The recent statements by Goan politicians regarding the attire of tourists had attracted much media attention in countries as diverse as Australia and the Indonesian state of Bali. 
The effects will be known once the tourism season commences in October. This was an observation made by Charles Bonifacio on the sidelines of an event hosted to install him as the President of Skal International Goa chapter, a worldwide network of professionals promoting global tourism and friendship.     
He felt it was rather unfortunate that people in senior positions were not conscious of the effect of what they said, given that tourism was such a sensitive industry. 
He felt the government ought to work to ensure that the industry does not suffer when situations like these occur. He cited the example of Thailand where he said despite the coup the government had ensured that tourism was not affected and this was visible in the number of tourists still visiting that country.  
Earlier in the evening the outgoing president Mario Sequeira welcomed the members and Secretary Shekar Divadkar presented a brief report of the year’s activities. Asked what his plans for his term was Charles said he intended to have an ambitious CSR initiative.

Being from Armed Forces he said where “camaraderie and service-before-self is the motto”, he found it easy to relate to the principles of Skal International. Lauding the tourism industry of Goa where services available being one of the best, he goaded Skal International Goa members to continue with this standards of service and strive to achieve higher standards and professionalism as Indian tourism industry is entering global competition.
Skal India National President Amarjit Lidder, expressed her solidarity with the excellent work being done by Skal International Goa. She said that Skal was the only global umbrella organisation related to tourism with its main thrust on fostering business amongst friends through fellowship and networking.
