A bit of understanding goes a long way

After two years, students are back in school. Concerns have been raised that they may experience some issues with orientation. After studying for two years from the comfort of their home and now having to attend classes or give exams in schools could be traumatic for some students. If such situations arise how are schools handling it?

The students are back at school. Attending class and in many cases appearing for tests and exams. It will be a new experience for the students who were used to attending classes online, sitting in the relative comfort of their home whilst sitting in bed in their pajamas. Now it’s back to school wearing uniforms and sitting attentively. For some of the students it can cause problems with orientation. Some students may find it difficult to concentrate, or sit still for too long or even result in headaches. So if such situations occur what are the teachers or more importantly schools doing to help students adjust?

Moderna of Goa High School Morpila said it was difficult for some children. She said the school was giving them time to adjust. She said “We are not stressing them. We are not particular about them completing their assignments on time. We are being lenient. It is very difficult for some of them. We are meeting some kids for the first time. Let me also say that children generally adjust but it is important to understand their problems”

Rashmi D souza , HM holy Cross Institute Quepem said as of now they had not received any expressions of concern either from students or their parents. She said “It has been noticed the children are a bit slow. It is understandable they have not been accustomed to a school environment for two years. We used to instruct them online and send them their notes as pdf files which would be accessed at their convenience. Now all that has changed, they are in school and answering their exams. They are still slow but yes they are showing improvement”. She went on to say that no child in the school had complained about headaches. She said they were using LED screens and white boards to instruct students and no one had complained, not even the parents.

Fr Jerry Vaz Headmaster of Guardian Angel Curchorem said he had not received any complaints. He said efforts had been made by the school to ensure the students were not under any unnecessary pressure. He said classes were being conducted online and offline and none of the students were under any pressure to come to school to attend classes. Now with exams being conducted he said students had to come for a few hours and leave after answering the paper. No one he said had complained nor had the school authorities observed any untoward incident.

Sandra D Cruz, a parent from Bicholim said her children were in school and were going to school to appear for exams. She said “My kids are careful. Eventually they have to start going to school, online lectures are ok for a short time but the experience of attending a class is something different. They learn skills to help them interact in society. Their teacher has said she was open to listening to any fears expressed by students or parents. I am comfortable with the situation; we have to all move on”.

Another parent Lester Rodrigues echoed similar sentiments saying it was time children went back to school. He said “The authorities in the school are open to any concerns raised by the parents or any student. They have to go back to class. Now my kids are attending exams, so they are in class for a short period of time. It is moving along fine. Let us keep the faith.”
