Burning effigies is passé. In a country
where cricket is considered to be a religion, fans burning effigies of
cricketers – the very same ones who they so ardently worship as gods – used to
be a common sight until some time ago. But with technology shrinking the world
and bringing it to people’s smartphones, Indian fans have taken the e-route to
convey their message – good or bad, to their idols. Nowadays, every good or bad
performance is rewarded in the forms of memes, tweets or internet jokes – most
of which go viral within a matter of minutes.
This time around, the cricketer who is
facing the music from fans all over the world is the Indian vice-captain, Virat
Kohli for his terrible performance against England in the test match series,
and his supposed girlfriend Anushka Sharma, who is with him in England to spend
some ‘quality time together’. The news of the two being together in England
didn’t go down too well with the fans of either, but it was Virat who drew more
flak, naturally, for his poor performance. Anushka, on other hand, was the butt
of all jokes for her alleged ‘lip-job’ that wasn’t received too well by her
fans. Blaming Anushka for being Virat’s off-field distraction, the Virat-Anushka
