Are you ready for fright night?

With 2016 being earmarked by the film industry as a great year for the genre of horror, Café looks at the releases of the year and asks fans how they feel about films that can make their skin crawl

In this new
age of exquisitely made and terrifying horror films, the age-old
concepts are being woven together for thrills in a new age. These
films, further supported by mesmerising camera work and a powerful
musical score, cause chills and ground-breaking new levels of
spine-chilling entertainment. Not every new release turns out to be a
hit, and the horror industry has its ups and downs like everything
else, no doubt. However, when a great film goes to floor, there’s
no stopping its success. Right up until this moment, franchises
like ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ are still spurning
out sequels, prequels and reboots for their following.

2016 has been
considered a year that seems focused on creating great movies in the
horror sphere. From the sequel of ‘The Conjuring’ to
‘Leatherface’, to the latest in the movie in ‘The Ring’
franchise, simply titled, ‘Rings’, the year has an exhaustive
list of great horror flicks lined up; the only exception now being
the much awaited, latest sequel from the ‘Amityville’ stable,
titled ‘Amityville: The Awakening’, which has been pushed back to
January 2017.

Some
love the genre, and can’t seem to get enough of it. For instance,
Diana Braganza, a public relations professional from Old Goa, talks
about why she enjoys it, saying, “Okay. I love mystery. And I most
definitely enjoy the thrill of expecting the unknown. I can’t wait to
watch ‘Conjuring 2’, which comes out this weekend. It’s not
that I don’t get scared. I actually freak out and practically watch
the movie with my eyes half closed, and sometimes my ears too. But it
still excites me.”

Others
sit firmly at the other end of the spectrum, like Sukanya Fadte, a
logistical professional from Vasco, does. When quizzed about the
matter, she laughs and says, “I absolutely hate horror movies.
Somehow, it’s only after watching a horror movie that you’re
convinced that zombies can appear from under the bed and that the
whole world is out to kill you.”

Whether
horror is your thing or not, one thing is for certain: this year has
plenty of it in store, with this week signalling a massive release in
the genre.
