Carnival spirit not likely to dampen, with alcohol ban on streets

The government has decided to ban the consumption of alcohol during the carnival float parade. This is a move by the government to reduce the possibility of any untoward incident during the show. Café spoke to a wide variety of people to ascertain their views on this move by the government.

   I think
it is a right decision. In the past something must have happened. The Carnival
is all about family and good fun. People drinking can get very loud and get
excited and go over the top which can make people around them very nervous.
This decision by the government must have been taken after much thought. It is
a commendable move and like I said earlier I support the move

DARRYL D’SOUZA, Dancer Calangute

According to me it is a very good move. It
will be safe for people and they can have fun without being worried about any
untoward incident taking place. You can go to the Summer Square if you want to
have a drink.

AKSHADA GODINHO, Student Panjim

I feel there is nothing wrong about it. I am a regular drinker
but yes there is a way of drinking. I must however say though the government’s
policies ensured the kind of tourists coming here is pure junk. And now they
have to initiate such a move. I would like to see the government initiate some
good policies so as to ensure we get is of a good standard. Otherwise I don’t
have a problem with the order.

ARMANDO GONSALVES , Goa for Giving Panjim

I have attended the parade in the past and yes I believe it is a
good move because some people over do it. .

STENISA SALDANHA, Asst to the Auditor at a firm , Marcel

I totally believe that responsible drinking should be encouraged
and this attitude should be taken right across the state, on the beaches
everywhere and not just at the Carnival. The government should have a policy in
place and implemented properly right across the state. This move is welcome,
but we need so much more decisive action by the government.

Goa, has off late seen a huge ingress of Indian tourists whose
behaviour is boorish. They leer and pass comments at Goan girls. They spit and
urinate in the open. Once they consume alcohol, they lose control of their
senses and act nasty and become repulsive. The Govt headed by Dr. Pramod Sawant
has done well to ban drinking while watching the carnival floats

Carnival should be celebrated in the traditional way. It is
always about people drinking. I firmly believe that if the government wants to
control drinking here the it should go the whole hog and control the drinking
on the beaches and yes, the cooking on the beaches too. They should not just
target people who have been doing this for years. It has been part of the
tradition where people watched the carnival with a drink in their hand. But now
the government has initiated this move. Well, ill just say, ok , fair enough.

KABIR PINTO MAKHIJA Former Deputy Mayor

Of course I don’t support this move. It will rob Goa tourism off
its charm. I don’t support people drinking and getting drunk, Responsible
drinking, I absolutely support but this move seems so abrupt given that people
are still drinking on the beaches.
