Chainsmokers: an addiction that is recommended

New York City-based duo The Chainsmokers consist of members Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. In 2012, they collaborated with Indian actress and recording artist Priyanka Chopra on the single ‘Erase’. They released their worldwide hit, ‘#SELFIE’ in December 2013 which got picked up by Dim Mak Records who rereleased it in January of 2014 and has been a major success. Playing at Vh1 Supersonic, the duo takes time out to chat with Café

Herald Café: What is the story behind the
name, The Chainsmokers?

The Chainsmokers: Avicii was taken so we
settled with The Chainsmokers. It’s sort of catchy, no?

HC: Having gotten together in 2012, what
was the story behind how you’ll met, since Andrew is from Portland and Alex is
from New York. What has the journey been like so far?

The Chainsmokers: We met through a mutual
friend who was working with us both. He thought we would make a good team. So
we met and really shared a lot of the same ambitions and passions. The journey
has been amazing! We have had the most amazing year of our lives, seen the
world and shared experiences we never imagined! The best part is that we are
just getting started!

HC: What are your views on the Indian EDM
scene? What’s the direction you see it going in?

TC: Well we really can’t speak much on it
considering we have never experienced it, but from what we gather on social
media, it seems like the scene is exploding faster than ever! Especially with
the news of TomorrowWorld coming in 2016. It’s a new market with lots of really
dedicated fans!

HC: How do you feel after seeing the
reaction of Indians to the Indian version of the #Selfie video?

TC: It was awesome! We couldn’t believe all
these different countries were taking the video and creating their own version
for their country. It was amazing. We know that cellphones and social media are
big in India, so we hoped it would be received well.

HC: How did the collaboration with Priyanka
Chopra happen? What was the experience like? Are there plans for further
collaborations with her in the near future?

TC: Drew was asked to work on a song for
her for her album. They ended up really liking it but Red One already did her
album. So they said why not make it a Chainsmokers’ song featuring Priyanka. OF
course we were into the idea and we did it! We never actually met her; that
happens a lot in music nowadays but she was supportive and lovely the entire
time, and we would work with her any day!

HC: The most quirky incident ever faced at
a concert / festival / performance / on tour?

TC: When we were playing Electric Zoo, a
hurricane began in the middle of our show and we had to cancel! We were very
upset and refused to leave the stage and people were going crazy.

HC: What are your future plans / projects?

TC: Just to keep making more music, work
with artists that inspire us and really build out a unique show that people
will walk away from in awe!

HC: What should people in India look
forward to from your tour?

TC: We are going to bring them one hell of
a party! They should cancel their work day the next day cause they’re going to
have to call in sick!

HC: Steve Aoki is remixing one of your
tracks. How does that make you feel?

TC: That guy is one of our biggest
inspirations and mentors. To have him remixing one of our tracks, it’s a ‘pinch
yourself’ moment for sure!
