Christmas with Saviourites to add festive cheer

In the past, Christmas celebrations were very vibrant in the villages and parishes across Goa. A programme would be chalked out by the parishioners in collaboration with the priests-in-charge of those respective parishes. The week-long programme included Carols singing competition, one-act play competition, crib and star competitions, besides other vibrant activities, thrown open not only for the young and old of that particular village, but also for the enthusiasts of neighbouring villages as well.

Preparations for crib and star competitions and rehearsals for the Carols singing and one-act play competition were in full swing in advance. Cash prizes and trophies kept for the winners of those competitions would attract more entries and participation.

In recent times, various contests conducted earlier in the villages are on the decline. During the festive season, the Carols singing competition organized by different villages would attract choir groups from several parishes with each parish choir competing with other parish choir members in terms of singing in melodious voices, music and overall presentation was concerned.

One such vibrant parish choir group is ‘Saviourites of Loutolim’ from the picturesque village of Loutolim, which has nurtured and produced many noted singers and musicians. This parish group was formed somewhere in the 90s by the late Fr Romano Gonsalves, who served then in the Saviour of the World church.

The choir group continued thereafter, under the mantle of Melba Monteiro, followed by Fr Joaquim Loiola Pereira. ‘Saviourites of Loutolim’ is now ably guided by maestro Seby Fernandes from the same village. Apart from participation in the Carols singing competition during Christmas, the group also featured in several mando festivals held annually and won many prizes. Their presence was also felt during the season of Lent, with reflection on repentance and mercy through hymns and ‘motets’.

To get Goans into the mood of Christmas, the ‘Saviourites of Loutolim’, parish choir of Loutolim will present ‘Christmas with Saviourites’, a concert of Christmas Carols, choir and orchestra conducted by Seby Fernandes. The 23-member choir will render 13 Carols in English, Konkani, Hindi and Latin.

There are 15 musicians in the troupe with instruments which include first violin (4), second violin (3), viola, cello (2), flute, keyboard, bass, drums and purch. Guided by the well-established conductor, all the singers and musicians are set to give their best in rendition and music during this joyous season.

‘Saviourites of Loutolim’ will perform at four different venues across Goa, namely Pilar, Navelim, Saligao and Panjim. And they will be regaling the audience with their melodious voices and soul-searching music.
