Combining Psychology with culture

St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Department of Psychology will be celebrating Psychofiesta, a unique festival that combine psychology and culture at a state level festival. Café finds out how the festival was envisioned for the students

 Psychology is the study of behaviour and the mind and though its origin dates back
centuries, it was only until a few years back that advances came up as studies.
A very interesting subject, the science requires the students to move out of
their classroom to understand the mind of those around them and how to use the
techniques in real problem solving.

St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Department of Psychology in
association with the Directorate of Art and Culture will present Psychofiesta
2018 – Wisdom of the Psyche, celebrating Psychology and culture. The college
festival will be held on March 10, 2018 at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa from 9am
onwards.

The Department of Psychology, for the first time envisioned a
programme to make the discipline of Psychology express itself larger and beyond
its classroom confinement. The faculty got together to call it Psychofiesta, a
positive discovery of one’s self.

Fr Ramiro Luis, assistant professor, Psychology, St Xavier’s
College, says, “Psychofiesta started three years back with the initiative to
give a chance for our psychology students to show their talents and the
department gave them an insight on what career options they can take. Now, that
it has grown, we are inviting psychology students from other colleges to
participate in various activities and competitions as the festival involves a
lot of learning. Nine colleges of Goa with psychology as their subject will
participate in Psychofiesta.”

The participating colleges include Dhempe College of Arts &
Science, Miramar, Carmel College for Women, Nuvem, Abbe Faria Department of
Masters, St Xavier’s College, Mapusa. Government College of Arts, Science and
Commerce, Khandola, Marcela, Institute of Nursing Education, VM Salgaocar
College of Law, Miramar, Don Bosco College, Panjim, M E S College of Arts and
Commerce, Zuarinagar and Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar. Each
college will be sending 12 of its representatives along with their teachers.

Psychofiesta is a state level festival headed by Dr Janet
Fernandes, head of Department, Psychology and Fr Jerome D’Silva, Principal of
St Xavier’s college is also a part of the department. Asta Shirodkar is the
student coordinator. The on- stage events will include dance fusion, fashion
show, quiz, duet singing, Mr and Ms Psychofiesta while the off stage events
will include Abstract art, the big picture, poetry, obstacle course and
photography.

“Every
event will carry the theme of culture and psychology including Mr and Ms
Psychofiesta which will be judged on various parameters of psychology. For the
offstage events too, art will involve abstract thinking, so a lot of cognitive
works be brought ahead through problem solving techniques. Besides, the events,
there will be food stalls and a sugar cane juice cart and handicrafts among
other such activities on campus to support the event,” concludes Fr Ramiro
