Art today need not only be on canvas; your drawing surface can be something as small as your fingernail. Many youngsters are picking up this creative pass-time. Café talks to a few college students about this latest trend

New trends usually find takers in colleges where youngsters are willing to experiment with their attire, accessories and style. A current trend gaining momentum in colleges is that of nail art. Trend of nail art painting among college girls is catching up swiftly. Multiple colours, landing strip, monochrome design are some of the common styles of nail art, with the latest addition to the list being caricaturing. This mix of art and style usually happens during special college events where the students get creative and incorporate the event or theme into their art. “The nail art painting is very attractive. It’s in vogue now, cartoon characters like minions are in now, everyone is trying it out. It’s becoming like a standard. It’s also an indicator that the girl is stylish,” says San Karob, an actor cum student from Don Bosco college, Panjim.  Nusha Anand Bandodkar, a student of Goa University, who has developed a flair for nail art through regular practice, says, “Nail art is becoming trendy day-by-day. It depends on one’s mood and the theme that is trending. Currently, since the football fever is high, FC Goa theme is in vogue. Nail art now also features in college competitions. It warrants style, precision and creativity. For me, more than an art, it is a hobby where I try out different ways to paint my nails and play with colours.”  For the Vaz sisters from Nachinola, it has become a hobby, and a bonding activity. Avril Vaz says, “Initially, I used to do nail art painting on my younger sister Alisha’s hand and now she has become so good at it that she has beat me in creativity.” Alisha Vaz, who is currently a student of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, says, “It’s a fashion statement in many colleges now. I always love to experiment with new patterns and designs. For me, it takes at least an hour to put good figures of cartoons characters. Flowery designs and landing strip takes fifteen minutes only. My friends insist that I design their nails. Since, we are not allowed to put it in college, I work from home.” She adds, “We have nail art painting competitions too, once a year in college. At that time, we can do such creative and artistic work in college.”       What might be seen only as a trend, actually requires a lot of detailing, patience and creativity. These students also refer to the interned for new trends, patterns and style.
