As they say, every cloud has a silver lining, and sometimes, this silver lining is all that we can hold on to
in difficult times and keep ourselves positive. Cooking during the coronavirus pandemic is one such silver lining.
With the restaurants being shut and everyone under a lockdown, a lot of people are emerging as chefs, a talent that even they didn’t imagine they possessed. Some are experimenting like mad scientists while others are giving their passion the time that it demanded and exploring
their creative side. If you have been on Facebook and Instagram, you could not have missed the hype that Dalgona Coffee is creating and it has got everyone to use their time at hand in tiring their hands till their arms fall off, beating that coffee. This coffee may be inspired from Korea, but the concept of creamy milky coffee, hand beaten, is not new to our households, however, due to the time and energy
it involves, it had become a recipe long forgotten. Now, of course, social media is swarmed by the posts of Dalgona Coffee and everyone is making it! Social media is proving to be a boon in such dull times of lockdown and food groups especially have seen uproar of engagement. Live cooking sessions, easy
recipes, involving children in cooking, recipes using limited resources are the current trends that all foodies are swearing by.
Foodmaniacs, born to eat is a food group run by Vickrham Vicky, a well known food blogger, which has
taken an initiative of showcasing live cooking sessions by home chefs in their group. It’s a great way to cater to a large audience and also share recipes and have direct interactions with the chef. Members of the group are also continuously sharing interesting and creative recipes for others to try at home. A ring samosa shared by Sneha Saikia was one such recipe. Saransh Goila, a celebrity chef, is spreading positivity during lockdown by sharing one new recipe daily and he is also promoting #TikTokChef, a cooking contest on TikTok to help people get creative and showcase their cooking talents.
YouTube has seen a surge in search for recipe videos and it has helped some small time YouTubers a great deal.
In fact, since there was a shortage of bread supply, making breads and pavs at home came around as most searched and shared recipes. Home Chef Association of India has also started a
series of live masterclass sessions with celebrity chefs wherein not only the chefs are sharing recipes but also answering people’s queries regarding cooking and ingredients.
Social media is also full of opportunities like online classes and workshops for people to master that skill
they have been wondering about since long. Be it simple cooking or baking techniques to more advanced level workshops, there are plenty of options available to not just keep you busy but also enhance a passion. Goan Foodomania, a Goa based food group on Facebook, is also a great place to learn and share some recipes and also watch live sessions by home chefs. A lot of people are seen sharing recipes, which can be made from ingredients available at home easily, using less number of ingredients all together. These recipes may have emerged as a practical result of the lockdown,
but for sure they seem super creative and worth trying even when you have abundance of ingredients lying at home. For example, there is a recipe of Chickpeas Pulao shared by Sean de Silva on the group that looked really interesting and is typically the need of the hour kind of recipe.A lot of recipes are
being made involving children since children are at home and this makes for a great way to not just keep
them busy or for parents to get a help from them, but it also prepares them to be independent in the future and learn something new every day. It teaches them values like caring for the family with everyone coming together, it teaches them to be responsible, attentive and creative.
So take this downtime as an excuse to unleash the chef within you, learn new skills, make new recipes, share with the world and feel connected with more people like you and get a feeling of community at large, all fighting this deadly spread of virus with their creative sides and you cannot ignore the fact that home cooked meals are any day healthier.
