COVID & after: Now comes the crime

A shoot-out killing gone in St Cruz, a fight between two hotel employees in which one gets killed and sporadic incidents of crime have muddied Goa’s peace. Is this a fallout of the present times we live in where people are unemployed or losing jobs not getting paid?

The
suspected gangland shooting did no wonders for the mood of the people. A people
buffeted by the virus that has resulted in job losses and slashed salaries.
This does not make for an ideal mix in a society that has been battling an
economic downturn for a while

I don’t think one incident is enough to raise fears of law and
order breakdown. The police are seen doing their job all over the state during
the pandemic. It’s for citizens to keep their cool and not react in a violent
manner, and support the government’s effort in situations like this

 There
was a dacoity in my neighbourhood. The entire house was emptied over the
weekend.  With blanket joblessness, the situation may worsen in the coming
future. With the lockdown and lack of financial support coming in on time, we
need to be proactive and support people who have lost jobs and are economically
vulnerable. About gang violence, that is a law and order issue which can be
avoided with intelligence inputs and preventive measures

Goa like most states in  India doesn’t have adequate police
personnel numbers to cater to the state’s population. Add to it the fatigue
that they must be feeling with probably no or very little leave due to these
months of lockdown. Of course, there will be a spurt in crime especially with
more people desperate for food and money, and the fact that not so many around
to do regular patrolling. When I am outside and heading back alone sometimes,
there’s a bit of fear for sure

 Rising
umployment and people out of jobs are turning out to be a serious concern. This
can result in high levels of stress and even cause severe damage to mental
health. Acute poverty has the dangers of people taking up on petty crimes in
the state for survival out of frustration. There have been incidents of this in
the past and timely measures need to be taken to curb or avoid such incidents.
Govt should come up with a module where people in the state are given ways to
be self sufficiently employed and find motivation in whatever job or skill they
take up. This can be a huge mental booster for both the pockets and the
mind

Governments all over the world have announced financial packages
for loss of business, our Government has to at least give some respite by way
of reduction of GST or reduction in electricity, water charges, etc or such
relief, during this pandemic period. When they are at least partially
financially taken care of, it will lessen their tendency to resort to violence

– Adv.
Melwin Viegas, Panjim

Standards in law and order have slipped in recent times. I
remember the days when the police were kept on their toes by the late CM
Manohar Parrikar. Many officers would mention that he would call them late at
night to get reports on what has happening in their area and on cases. The cops
had a very tough time. They would curb illegal activities and there was fear.
That has now reduced. Now the major focus seems to be on issuing challans. They
seem to have been given a target to achieve

President TTAG , Vasco

By
opening up the borders they have worsened the COVID situatrion brought the
virus into the state hence creating more fear and instability which has
directly affected businesses, and created more frustration and unemployment
leading to a bad law and order situation

Our Goa police is doing their best to handle the law and order
situation in Goa. Yes, the law and order situation has deteriorated due to the
virus and migrants but we can be vigilant and keep an eye on our youth and
their friends circle and channelize their energy in the right direction and
ensure crime rates remain low
