As part of the celebration of the 70th year of adoption of the Constitution of India, Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Arts, Science and Commerce held a debate competition on Banning of Corporal Punishment with reference to Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Welcoming the gathering, Principal Rupa S Prabhu Khope spoke about rights and duties given by the Constitution. She also gave her views on corporal punishment. She opined that corporal punishment should not be given and that a lot of discipline can be promoted through dialogue and counselling. The winners were the team speaking in favour of the banning of corporal punishment lead by Shruti Gawas. The other team members were Om Bandodkar, Shehzan Khan, Madhur Choudhary and Esha Kulkarni. The prize for the best speaker was bagged by Claire Gomes. The judges on the occasion were, Vice Principal Rekha Keni Gurrala, teachers, Dhiraj Vengurlekar and Sheetal Parab. Earlier, a talk on the topic Constitution of India- fundamental duties was given by Professor Dr Ketan Govekar, Head of the Department of Political Science, Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Miramar. He informed students about the framing of the Constitution and the enormous contribution of Dr Ambedkar. He also explained the eleven duties mentioned in the Constitution.
