Does Goa really have a GenX of leaders for it’s future?

There is a generation of Goa’s leaders who are
ageing and ailing. While there is a relatively younger leadership which has
been around for long, Goa doesn’t have a nursery of talent which will go on to
mould and shape great leaders of the future.

On the last Tuesday of each month Café will focus
on one chosen topic which concerns the youth of Goa today. Even as we celebrate
their successes and joys, this series, Goa’s GenX: Hope & Aspirations-
2019, will feature hopes, aspirations and demands of the Goan youth, especially
in a year which can decide the discourse of Indian politics. We begin the
series by asking how do we create better leaders for tomorrow

ADV. YATISH NAIK, GENERAL SECRETARY, GOA PRADESH CONGRESS
COMMITTEE , ALTO-PILERNE, BARDEZ I believe that more students getting into public life is a
welcome thing as it only means more and more youngsters want to save our
democracy.

If the school curriculum is made to include aspects of public
administration in its domain it will be good for the young minds. The basics
pertaining to our citizens’ rights and duties if disseminated at the school
level will help in creating better citizens.

Whether
it is at the school, college, in the village or at a higher level, we must work
together to bring about common good. We must realize that ultimately in a
democracy the citizenry has a vital role to play and we must discharge our
duties with devotion.

 PRASHANT NAIK, FORMER
STUDENT LEADER

Politics is definitely attractive, because you see number of
students in politics at the Panchayat level. There is a huge number. But in the
Assembly there are leaders who have represented many years and they do not
allow second line of leadership to emerge. (We have seen how only children and
siblings of politicians get a direct entry into full time politics)

Politics
should be taught in schools, in fact long back it should have been initiated,
that too thoroughly and the teaching of constitution should be made compulsory

AHRAZ MULLAH, NATIONAL STUDENTS UNION OF INDIA (NSUI) STATE
PRESIDENT , PONDA

Students feel politics to be associated with hatred, corruption,
vindictiveness and what not, the idea of being targeted by certain individuals
brings a fear in the minds of students which they feel, will affect their
academic life

The
moment students believe that politics is all about a change they can bring in
the society they will start getting interested in it, but they should also make
sure their careers are not affected by the same.

ASSIS SHAIKH, 3RD YEAR BA MASS MEDIA STUDENT, COLLEGE
ENVIRONMENTAL SECRETARY, PANJIM Many
young students are getting into politics because they want a change in the
society. According to me administration and public policy should be taught at
schools because they should know what to do in a difficult situation.

The
only problem is people hate politics because of how it has presented itself in
all these years. It’s not like there weren’t influential leaders in the past.

GRAHAM ALPHONSUS, 3RD YEAR BBA STUDENT, COLLEGE GENERAL
SECRETARY , MARGAO

I feel that the students have lost faith in the current
political system and that they do not find any use in joining a certain
political party as they feel that their voices and opinions are seldom heard or
taken seriously.

We all have concerns about our future relating to education,
jobs etc. I think that public policy and administration should be taught to
students in school as it will enable them to understand the issues faced at a
local and state level. It will also teach them how to efficiently solve them
and make the existing framework better.

Students
should be prepared to be leaders to face situations as and when it appears; be
it workplace or life decisions.

SABINA MARTINS, FORMER STUDENT LEADER, ACTIVIST AND TEACHER
PANJIM Electoral Politics
today is to be in power by wrong methods and to hold on to power by hook or
crook. The task of making good policies, legislation by participatory methods
and overseeing implementation is not the agenda. Students get introduced into
public life when they are involved in activity beyond academics. What role they
play depends upon whom they connect with NGOSs, Political parties, religious
groupings or groups funded for various purposes.

Leadership
in educational institutions should be encouraged to develop skills like
speaking, articulating without fear , withstanding pressure, good interpersonal
relationship, carrying out responsibilities, taking evidence based and
democratic decisions, and practising equality.
