Facets of contemporary art

Unnati Singh, whose latest art exhibition reads itself as an organic metaphor of an internal and external cosmic web viewed through an individual’s point of view, is an artist inspired by international audiences from group and solo exhibitions in India, Europe and the Middle East

Internationally acclaimed artist Unnati Singh has put up a show at the Cube Gallery, Moira on her latest works. Titled, ‘Webotika – I am an Alien and this is my Spacecraft’, the exhibition comprises new and inspiring mixed media collage paintings and drawings, and installations of ready-made objects. Unnati Singh allures to be open-minded and fearless with her works, having layered in metaphors and symbols of deeply personal and universal changes.
“The title of the exhibition ‘Webotika – I am an Alien and this is my Spacecraft’, is puzzled together by fusing the words web, erotic and robotic and a phrase from the painting ‘Void’. It suggests an organic metaphor of an internal and external cosmic web, as seen from an individual human being in contemporary times,” says artist Unnati Singh.
Born in Rajasthan, Unnati lives and works in Goa, Mumbai and Delhi and has attended various artist residencies globally. She holds a degree in Textile and Economics. Various projects and workshops with children and artists were passionately conducted by her to bridge contemporary eras.
Her pieces also relate to the notion of time and space and look between and beyond beginnings and endings. As an artist, Unnati has the ability to render a visual picture, to make a conceptual idea tangible, and probe into the future. Equipped with enhanced sensitivity and an intuition she trusts, she explores spaces beyond our feasibility and renders past, present and future with each other.
Although the matter is serious, don’t be deceived, because Unnati awakens, surprises and touches us with her witty imageries. Her drawings on paper are radiant and particularly humorous. Entering the multi-spaced installations of her works is like falling into a dream. We see superheroes and emoticons co-existing with children book and lexicon cut outs of extinct reptiles and insects, organs and city scans, plants, planets and airplanes.
The artist has “painted, drawn, written, cut and pasted images; juxtaposition-ed forms into unfamiliar territories”. She tries “to make the parallel worlds tangible and visible.” Painting and drawing simultaneously on canvas and paper, her method is subconscious and spontaneous, yet she defines conceptual ideas substantially.
Unnati candidly addresses current cultural, political and socio-political issues. She merges the personal with the terrestrial in unique and new mixed media collages and installations of ready-made objects. Conveying meaningful metaphors, pop culture symbols are rendered with serious, yet witty imageries.
The Unnati Singh exhibition ‘Webotika – I am an Alien and this is my Spacecraft’ has been curated by Katharina Domscheit-D’Souza. The exhibition will be on until April 24 from 11am to 7pm at The Cube Gallery, Moira
