Communicare Trust’s biannual initiative to
provide better eating habits to orphanage kids, ‘The Food Bank’ was a great
success. The idea behind the initiative is to collect as much food (non
perishable) and utilities as possible, used in everyday life, and then give the
same to various institutions. The money saved by the institutions can then be
invested to give the children a better education.
“We have around 100 children in our
children homes. It is very difficult to meet their daily needs. Communicare has
been supplying food via Food Bank since December 2013 and it makes a great
difference in our expenses,” said Terrence D’Silva, from Bethesda Life Center.
In December 2013, the collected items
amounted to 1 ton and catered to 5 orphanages. “For us, it has been such a
rewarding experience tying up with the Food Bank,” says the owner of Magsons
Group, Kirit Maganlal. Magsons has been supporting Communicare Trust’s Food
Bank since its inception. All the staff and employees play a major role in the
process.
This time around, the volunteers were
stationed at Magsons, Miramar, Porvorim and Caculo Mall on December 19 and 20,
2014 from 4-8pm. They had a custom made shopping list to meet the needs of the
orphanages which were given to every customer who walked in. The customers were
requested to pick one or more item and drop it into the Food Bank cart at the
exit after billing.
The result was tremendous and Communicare
Trust managed to collect 2 tons of food and hundreds of toothbrushes. We had
approximately 300 donors from different walks of life donating food items and
utilities towards the Food Bank and making it a massive success.
On December 22, 2014, the food items were
distributed to seven institutions, namely, Little Angels , Chorao, Bethesda
Life Center, Santa Cruz, Care and Compassion- Altinho, Mother Teresas Roses,
Parra, Margaret bosco Bal Sadan- Bastora, ASRO, Thivim and Asha Mahal- Taleigao
The next Food Bank will take place in June
2015.
