For a Greener cause: When the Treelionaires descended in Bicholim

With the aim of
promoting the action of planting more trees for a
greener Goa, a group known as Global
Shapers Panjim Hub carried out a tree plantation drive in Bicholim.

The Global Shapers
Community is a network of young people driving dialogue, action and change.
Born out of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network
of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address
local, regional and global challenges. With more than 7,000 members, the Global
Shapers Community spans 376 city-based hubs in 156 countries.

The recently
organised event took place at the ITI Bicholim campus with the theme being ‘Be
a Treelionaire’ (the name of the citizen plantation drive of the Global Shapers
Community).

“Today,
we planted 41 indigenous trees at the ITI college Bicholim. The saplings were
planted by a team of shapers, friends and parents with the support of the
forest department. Species included Shankar tree, custard apple and neem among
others. We had a super enthusiastic team – didn’t let the rain bother us. It is
not enough to simply plant trees and forget about them so the global shapers
community has selected this college for a number of reasons, including the fact
that the college will continue to water and grow the saplings. We take these
small steps every month to learn about the issues first hand and make our small
contribution,” said Ninoschka Pinto of the group.
