Goa Velha-based Sheryl Vas is sporting the colours of red, green and white for the last few days, as she is enjoying watching the matches played by Portugal at the FIFA World Cup in Doha. She has been for four matches played by Portugal vs Uruguay, South Korea, Switzerland and Morocco.

Daughter of Antonio Joao Vas and Leonildes Julieta de Miranda, she composed the music, wrote the lyrics and sang two songs dedicated to the World Cup and the passion of the Portuguese players showcased in the game. Currently teaching music in two schools, Fr Agnel High School, Pilar, and Immaculate Heart of Mary High School, Goa Velha, Sheryl trains children from class 5 to 10 in violin, singing and theory of music.

“I started learning music at the age of 7 at Pilar Music School. I used to sing for choirs and acted and sang for various musical operas. I started singing professionally in bands for various events and participated in many singing competitions like Herald Group’s Goencho Avaz, Vem Cantar, Aikat Mhozo Tallo and I also won Vhodlle Goencho Avaz. My passion for music is my profession right now,” says Sheryl Vas who has completed her music grades from Trinity College London.

Her first song was ‘It’s your moment Qatar’ which is composer, written and sung by Sheryl while the music programming, mixing and mastering is by Adrian Sequeira. “It’s your moment Qatar’ is all about Qatar, depicting the beautiful country. It’s the first time in the history that the Middle Eastern country is hosting the World Cup and there are more than a million fans visiting the Gulf country during the month long tournament. My second song ‘Forca Portugal’, is a song on football for the Portugal team. The song is in English with a few line in Portuguese. This song is also composed, written and sung by me while the music programming and arranging is by Roque Lazarus and Mukesh Ghatwal. The recording, mixing and mastering is by Mukesh and the video was shot by Arjun Gonsavee. A special thanks to Marcelino D’Costa too,” says Sheryl.

Speaking about the inspiration for the songs, Sheryl says, “The excitement of World Cup was all over the world. I love football. I planned to attend the World Cup which was the best decision of my life. Portugal is my favourite team, and I am a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo. I planned to compose a song only for Portugal team but my dad insisted to compose a song for Qatar too, as he has been working there for the past 40 years.”

Describing the vibe in the stadium and among the fans, Sheryl says, “The vibe in the stadium is very good and it’s totally a different experience. People from all over the world are coming together as one for their favourite team, chanting and cheering with enthusiasm. Whether you are in a metro, in a mall or walking on the streets wearing your favourite jersey, there is a totally different vibe everywhere. It’s a well-organized and well managed event. The stadiums are so beautiful and well designed. Each and every visitor is well guided making the tourist feel very comfortable. Memories of Qatar world Cup 2022 will never be forgotten. I too met Goa’s top footballer players too like Armando Colaco, Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, Peter Valles and Derrick Pereira.”
