Goa tourism industry takes hats off to CM who says ‘STOP’ to muscle-flexing taxi-men’

The taxi imbroglio has been like a dark stain on the tourism landscape of the state. The taxi muscle flexers (as the taxi owners can fairly be called), for want of a better word has ruled the roost. Being the very first interaction with the tourist, they have been generally brusque in their interactions. Finally, the state is acting like a state. The tough approach of Goa CM Pramod Sawant of not bending to the bullying and blackmail of the tourist taxi operators have given new hope to the people of Goa and tourists that Goa will get a just, taxi service, in which all Goans can participate Herald spoke to the people of Goa and stakeholders like members of the hospitality industry to hear the real voices

It is a very good stand taken by the government and the
no-nonsense stance of the CM has to be commended. What has been going on for so
long has been so bad for our business. Nothing like this ever happens in any
other state in the country. We need privatization, we have been at the mercy of
these people for too long. Goa miles is the best thing to have happened to the
state and the others will have to learn to adapt. This will bring the situation
under control. Enough is Enough- Managing Director – Mr. Bruno Gomindes
Managing Director of Travco Holidays Pvt. Ltd.,

It is a very good job being done by the
government. This problem has been festering for a very long time and now the
govt has the bull by its horns. They should not give into any of the pressure.
This is a state that depends on tourism and we cannot have a section holding
the trade at ransom. The solution will have to be fair and the pricing will
have to be market-friendly. It should be able to give the customer a choice and
the development of appropriate technology means the customer should have the
power to make a choice of their benefit- Anand Mukherjee GM Planet Hollywood

I think the CM has done a fantastic and I firmly believe
app-based services like Goa Miles is the future. It gives people an option. Now
the striking taxi drivers have to decide whether they want to join Goa Miles or
create another app to compete with this platform. It will, of course, have to
be as per the regulations put in place by the authorities. That is the future
and there is no two ways about it- Bush Miranda GM at Cicerone Air Transport

Firstly kudos to our present chief minister to stand up for
reality, instead of bowing down to the demands of a small a community of 25,000
holding the locals and tourism of the state to ransom for the last 25 years,
which shockingly none of the governments over the years have been able to
correct!

I was based in Kerala when the tourism build-up started in 1996,
when the taxis there took a lead from Goa and started obstructing free movement
of tourists. The govt took a stern hand immediately arrested and withdrew
licenses of erring drivers and put an end to the rot.

Goa has never had a systemized public transport system, leave
alone a 24/7 service and the poor citizens and locals alike are left to the
mercy of drivers charging exorbitant rates at their whims & fancy- Lyndon

What most tourism captains, which is the refrain of the common
man in Goa, stress on is that Goa is the only state in the country that has no
methodology of charging customers, refusal to accept meters and now even an
app, which they themselves can benefit from, now is the time to correct this
system and formulate taxi fares all through the state.

Some
have suggested that it’s high time a political reply is also given to the taxi
operator muscle-flexers. “It’s high time the tourism bodies that control well
over 25,000 odd voters join hands and support the government with a strong
message that no more of this will be tolerated. Common digital platforms
clearly showcase the support on all fronts, we can’t bow down to a few MLA’s to
support a small vote bank that use threats and unethical behaviour to further their
demands”, said Lyndon Alves.
