Goan Doctors conduct medical camp for prison inmates

St Luke’s Medical Guild Goa recently conducted a medical camp for the inmates of Central Jail Colvale in collaboration with Prison Ministry of India, for the benefit and healthcare of the inmates. Around 300 patients were examined; which included 222 inmates and other jail staff. This was the third consecutive year a camp of this nature was held

On 26 August 2018, St Luke’s Medical Guild Goa conducted a medical camp for the inmates of Central Jail Colvale in collaboration with Prison Ministry of India, for the benefit and healthcare of the inmates. Around 300 patients were examined; which included 222 inmates and other jail staff. At the onset, the president Of St Luke’s Medical Guild,,Dr Enid de Sa Miranda, welcomed the members, Prison Ministry , staff and inmates of the jail. Then, In his address to the gathering ,the secretary of the guild Dr Ravin Rego reminded all those gathered, that 26 august 2018 being Rakshabandhan Day ,just as the relationship between a brother and sister are strengthened, so also we should strengthen the doctor patient relationship. This was followed by the lighting of the traditional lamp by the Central Jail Superintendent Shyam Sundar Parab , members of the guild, members of prison ministry and inmates. Superintendent Parab then declared the camp open. In his welcome note, he shared that it was indeed his pleasure to have such a camp in the jail under his command for the third consecutive year. The medical team included general physicians, cardiologist, orthopedicians , ophthalmologists ,dermatologists, gynaecologists, ENT surgeon, psychiatrists, and counselors.
There was also Random Blood Sugar testing and Bone Densitometry testing. All those who were examined were provided free medications and free consultations. Those who required references were referred to Asilio hospital or Goa Medical College. Free spectacles were given to those who needed it.
The security arrangements were perfectly done by the staff of the central jail under the supervision of the Asst Superintendent Chandrakant Harijan. A team of volunteers from the inmates assisted in the smooth running of the camp.

The camp culminated with a fellowship lunch specially prepared by the prison inmates.
The team praised Superintendent Parab who remained present during the entire conducting of the camp and his support staff for the excellent organization and wonderful hospitality extended to the guild members..
This was the third consecutive year where St Luke’s Medical Guild conducted a medical camp at the central jail. And they would like to continue with this activity in the years to come.
