One of Goa’s most prolific musicians has come up with a project that will involve the participation of singers from all over the world. Colin D’Cruz bassist who made his name in the music scene in Mumbai over several years before returning to his roots in Goa has been involved in international collaborations in the past. Colin said “It is a traditional Christmas carol called Angels we have heard on high. It was first published in 1846 and since the song is a free domain, anyone can record the son without infringing copy right laws. These laws came into being in 1925”. He said his interest in collaborating with international artists received a boost after the internet commenced. His first project involved singers from different countries singing the same song in their language. Colin’s next project involved soloists from various parts of the world interpreted Thelonious Monk’s Straight no chaser. He said he received responses from soloists from all over the world. In this project now, singers from all over the world will join the chorus of this traditional Christmas carol. Colin said the idea was the make the whole world sing. He said “Every day there are three or four singers joining in from different parts of the world like Singapore, America and Canada. A large number of singers from Goa are involved with Sonia Shirsat singing the lead verse followed by Lulu Fortes and various Kingfisher voice singers like Queenie Fernandes and jazz singer Daniella Rodrigues. As of today we have 68 singers and we hope to get 100.” The rendition he said would be very different and would be a gradual buildup starting with just one voice followed by four and which will increase and eventually end with all the singers participating. Recording is in progress and it is expected to be completed by November 10. Following post production and the shooting for a video, it will be available mid November on various digital platforms. Colin expects many more singers from the rest of the country to participate and hopes Father Mateus Rodrigues too, the parish priest of Saligao participates because he is a fantastic baritone singer. Colin hopes the song is received well by everyone in Goa, in the rest of the country and the world. The world he put it was going through strange times and it would be nice if everyone focused on the positive in the festive season.
