Goans lament: Sport sport everywhere but nowhere to go

The season of the sporting extravaganza is upon us. The European football Championship has commenced. Later on Sunday the delayed Copa America commences in Brazil. Oh lest we forget, the French Open Tennis Championships is on which will then be followed by Wimbledon. In between that India and New Zealand will contest the finals of the first World Test Championship . Then of course there will be a full fledged test series against England and then the big daddy of all sporting events, the Olympics. All this sport but where will the fans watch it all, considering restaurants and more specifically sports bars are still shut. Though they will stil watch at home, the thrill is to enjoy these mammoth event at sports bars and restaurants with friends amd frenemies (friends who are sporting enemies) How will the fans in Goa manage to have fun and watch these events?

Usually
at this time of the year, when there’s so much sporting activity going on,
there are usually multiple screenings going on at different venues of all
different sports. But now because of the pandemic, a lot of people have
screenings at their friends’ places, and some even have watch parties on zoom,
twitch etc. It’s a far cry from the electric atmosphere at public screenings, but
this is the reality thanks to the current situation we are in.

This is
definitely the true Summer of Sports in Europe with all the sporting events
happening at the same time. So much of sport, it feels like Christmas came
early. With the sports bar and restaurants shut due to the government curfews
it’s not really possible to meet at public locations. The best thing to do is
someone organise screenings at our local BPS club with social distancing norms
if possible.

Duncan Rodrigues, Margao

This is
one of the major sporting seasons in the calendar year in Europe and across the
world. They’re all good to go out and watch because most of them are vaccinated
unlike our country that is slacking. In India, It’s not right for us as
promoters of the beautiful game to organise screenings as well as it’s
difficult to maintain social distancing no matter how much we try. People
should try a digital experience of watching online through Zoom calls or have
an audio session on Clubhouse while grabbing a beer.

Conrad Barreto, Margao

As the
sports championships have begun a lot of spectators around the world will be
present at the venues which will be at limited capacity. but in Goa if the
sports bars are closed then the sports enthusiasts will be totally disappointed
as they always get together and screen matches at a sports pub. I feel it is
the right time for the sports bars to open as they will also get a source of
income and the sports loving fans will also be pleased to watch the games
together

Sports
is everywhere but no place to enjoy except your homes.

Bosco Medeira, Margao

Its been
ages since we have been restricted to our homes, totally distant from the life
we used to enjoy because of the covid pandemic. But since the major sporting
events like, Euros, copa america, have all lined up in the coming few weeks, I
think all the fans need to come together and enjoy these events through digital
rooms like Zoom calls, google meet from the comfort of their homes.
