Within minutes of the final whistle having
been blown, the internet was flooded with viral images in an attempt to mock
Brazil after their 7-1 defeat to Germany.
The iconic statue of Jesus Christ the
Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, normally a talisman of the country’s hope, has been
quickly photoshopped in various new avatars, following the squad’s semi-final
humiliation. However, the buck stops far from there. From images of David Luiz
and Luis Felipe Scolari to team followers torching the national flag, the
trending images just do not cease.
The host nation’s worst ever defeat over
the course of its 100-year footballing history, saw a record breaking 35.6
million tweets being sent over the course of the match on Tuesday. Facebook, in
the meanwhile, saw a rise in their online activity too, with more than 200
million posts, shares, comments and likes during the match. The involvement is
estimated to involve approximately 66 million people, which is a record in
itself.
