Our town by the river – Lost glory?
Mirror
mirror on the wall, who is the best MLA of them all?. This
question is doing the rounds as Panjim prepares for anther by elections. And
while the trend is to figure what are the issues dogging Panjim, we thought we
should ask what kind of attributes should the man in charge of Goa’s most
important town have? What came up were some interesting ones- passion,
commitment, accessible and transparent and accountable. We hope the main
contenders for the Panjim by-polls are reading this.

I really have no expectations from the MLA’s. I only hope
they ensure better governance and also reach out to the people and solve their
problems.

There are a lot of demands that I can put forth and a lot
of measures I’d like to see complete from our future MLA. However, right now
what we need most is someone who is a good human being before anything else. To
understand the people and be there for them, while aiding us through our
crisis.

The first priority
of an MLA should be service to people. He/she should understand what the people
need, shouldn’t misuse his/her power and there has to be transparent and
accountable in their dealings. And an MLA should also help preserve the very
nature of democracy and be a dedicated
and honest individual. He/she should also work for the development of the
constituency.

I live in an area where there are frequent power cuts, no
proper drainage and a lot of garbage. I would expect the elected candidate of
my area to look into these affairs. It is also important to provide job
opportunities to the large number of youth who are unemployed. I would also
like him to look into the travel related problems which get really bad on
Sundays.
