International tiatr Sammelan: A shot in the arm!

The sammelan highlighted the importance of bringing in academic rigor to this art form which has been part of the Goan ethos for well over a century

 The Second
International Tiatr Sammelan struck the
right chords with the right people; stressing the need for academics in the
culture of tiatr. If the proceedings of the day were any indication, better
days are ahead for tiatr. The day long convention just drove one point home:
the need for steeping up academic work in tiatr!

Brainchild of Michael Jude Gracias the man who has brought in
academics in tiatr, and is solely responsible for the academic activities of
tiatr in Colleges, Higher Secondary Schools and Schools in Goa, the Second
International Tiatr Sommelan was organized by Kala Niketan Goa- Majorda and
found favour with two great Tiatrists of the day: Roseferns-the King of
Centuries and Prince Jacob-the true face of Konkani Tiatr and Cinema, who
headed the Second International Tiatr Sommelan Organising Committee as the
Sommelan Chairman and Reception Chairman respectively.

Academic work by academicians was what featured in the day long
convention with no people of political background occupying the dais and people
from the academic field and institutions taking total control of the
proceedings of the day! The Sommelan had the backing of reputed educational
Institutions from Goa; Kala Academy’s Goa College of Theatre Arts, Nirmala
Institute of Education, Goa College of Arts, St Xaviers College, MES College,
Fr. Agnel College, Carmels College for Women besides other International,
National and Goan Associations.

The Inaugural Session saw Ramrao Wagh, Principal of Kala
Academy’s Goa College of Theatre Arts, who in his address as the Chief Guest
set the ball rolling for the day by suggesting that the Convention should
resolve that the Chair of Tiatr be instituted in the Goa University so that
academics and research work in tiatr be streamlined and undertaken for the
growth and betterment of Tiatr. Reception Committee Chairman Prince Jacob
Fernandes, was quick to second the proposal which was unanimously accepted by
the delegates.

The concluding session saw the Jnyanpeeth Awardee Damodar Mauzo,
appreciating the work of the Tiatr fraternity in fostering and promoting
Konkani language for the last 129 years and calling for more of academics into
tiatr.
