Internship: A great start to your career

It’s summer time! But unlike earlier times, when youngsters mostly relaxed during their summer vacations, collegegoers today are trying to get a glimpse of the industry they are planning to work in, through internships. Café speaks to students regarding the benefits of taking up internships

Almost every professional college, today, wants
its students to complete internships. In fact, it’s a
part of the college curriculum nowadays. And why
not? Internships are a must for every student as far as
the competitive world of jobs is concerned. It’s like
the role play of your future career. It shows you how
your future would be. That’s why, more and more
students are willingly taking up internships in their
places of interest.
When asked about the same, Mandira Martins, a
student of IHM who is going to intern at Goa Marriott
Resort and Spa this summer, says that she is looking
forward to her internship as she believes that it’s
only through hands-on experience that you know
what exactly you would be doing in the career you
have chosen. You understand your job and how the
industry works. This is the reason, according to her,
why sometimes people even change their area of
interest after pursuing an internship.
In an internship, you get the chance to work
closely with the professionals in your field. You
can develop new contacts, have mentors and gain
good recommendations for future references. Most
importantly, it gives you experience and practical
knowledge. Prabhav Sidhaye, a student of National
Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, who interned at
Persistent Systems Limited last year, says, “Interning
was a requirement at my college. I’m thankful for it
because it gave me insight into the working of the
industry in which I am planning to build my career. It
gave me exposure to the functioning of the industry
and I also learnt how to work in a team along with
colleagues and seniors. The internship was very
beneficial as I could try my hand at some newer
technologies that are currently used in the field,
something we can’t really do in college.” When asked
if the seniors were motivating, he said that his bosses
were cooperative and understanding and tried to
make the experience learning-friendly.
Internships that were earlier limited to a few fields
like medicine and accounting are now available
in almost every field. Whether media houses, IT
companies, manufacturing sector or hotel industry,
students are now able to take a taste of work life
before entering it officially. And even industries like
to hire people who know about their work instead
of freshers who need to be trained right from zero.
Thus, even they are opening their doors to eager
interns
