Justice cannot be jungle justice: Goans react to Hyderabad encounter

One politician in Telangana wanted public lynching of rape accused. Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan said in Parliament, that rape accused should be handed over to the public and lynched, and Goa’s Minister Michael Lobo, reportedly said that the rape accused should be hanged in public or in a stadium. Throughout India, public figures are calling for jungle justice, asking for a public murder of rape accused even before they are convicted. While the absolute ager and wrath against the impunity of the rapists is justified, has a line been seriously crossed when Jungle Justice is being sought to replace justice?  Encounter
deaths are premeditated of heinous murders

Encounter
deaths is one the most premeditated of heinous murders. It is the principle of
natural justice that (i) Every person is innocent until provedotherwise Q)

Justice if India, S.A. Bobde. Justice loses character if it becomes revenge”.
This is exactly what has happened to the 4 rape accused.

In the absence
of the rule of law and “due process, being followed in courts, the result would
be chaos and disorder in society. Returning violence against violence only
accentuates and multiplies violence only an uncivilised society can turn itself
to be an agent of death.

Shocked when friends supported
police action

Absolutely
follow the law. Sometimes there is a delay in giving justice and it should get
better. A lot of sensitisation should take place regarding the patriarchy in
evidence in the force. Many of them don’t take crimes against women seriously.
I don’t support killings, a mockery of human rights going on. This needs to be
stopped. I was shocked when many of my friends supported the action of the
police. It will damage society. We should not repeat what we hear on whatsapp.

This was done under public pressure
and to run away from the investigation

A claim that
the four accused in the Hyderabad Veterinarian’s rape case were killed in
cross-fire is a story which I find difficult to believe. This is a clear case
of cold blooded murder. An attempt to run away from the investigations is clear
due to public pressure. They decided to thereore close the issue. These
policemen with their superiors need to be arrested forthwith. A clarification:
I don’t sympathise with the criminals – but only that they need to be brought
to justice and given punishment in accordance with law.

Unfortunate that advocates and
professionals are clapping hands

It is criminal
jurisprudence that a criminal has to be tried and punished. There can be no
punishment without trial/ now. A lot of people are in a celebratory mood these
days after the Hyderabad encounter. It is very unfortunate that very educated
professionals and even advocates are clapping hands. This shows the system has
completely collapsed and if we celebrate this collapse by killing criminals
then it would be a jungle raj. Not acceptable. The police need to be arrested.
This sets a dangerous precedent. This cannot be condoned.

Judicial system has to take priority

Everyone is
angry at rapes but the judicial system has to take priority. The accused should
be tried and then convicted, nothing can happen before that.

Don’t know facts, but laws should
take its course

We don’t know
all the facts. Whether they tried to snatch guns or not. The law of the land
should take precedence. This seems like a case of a chance encounter where an
accused grabbed a gun. Then the police are usually forced to take necessary
measures but like I said I don’t now the facts but ideally yes the law of the
land should take its course
