The Ketevan World and Sacred Music Festival is celebrating its second. Besides bringing together the
musical traditions from different eras of the East and the West, the festival
is giving music lovers the opportunity to enjoy and learn about the various
musical traditions from musicians from different parts of the world. One event
of the festival was the three-day symposium that included artistes and
lecturers from several countries, including Vasco Negreiros (Portugal), Tamas
Bubno (Hungary), Sonia Shirsat (India), Santiago Lusardi Girelli (Argentina),
Helena Mourinho (Portugal), Sebanti Chatterjee (India), Marialena Fernandes
(Austria) and Karl Luchtmayer (United Kingdom).
The final symposium presented by Goa University Western Music
Chair and Ketevan World and Sacred Music Festival will be held today, February
16, 2017 at International Centre Goa, Dona Paula from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The
theme of the symposium is ‘Western Music In India And Goa’ with lectures by
Sonia Shirsat (India) on ‘Fado in Goa: How to survive to a change of
generation’, Sebanti Chatterjee PhD Candidate University of Delhi, Delhi School
of Economics, Marialena Fernandes, Karl Luchtmayer and Santiago Lusardi Girelli
on ‘Paths and Horizons for the Western Music education in India’.
“The concerts over the weekend were very well attended with 75
per cent of the audience on the first day and then a rapid increase in the
consecutive two days. We also got a good response from people who attended the
first two symposiums. The symposiums are open to all and they have different
themes and lectures and the topics are not repeated every year. Those who are
interested in the theme can walk in on the day of the lecture,” says Santiago L
Girelli, the Artistic Director of the festival.
The Goa University Choir had the opportunity to perform at two
of the festival’s concerts and this weekend will be their third and final
concert at the Second Ketevan World and Sacred Music Festival. “It was
interesting for the choir as they had collaboration at the Bach´s World Concert
with choirs Vandalia (Spain) and St Ephraim Choir (Hungary) and musicians from
countries like UK, Portuguese, Germany, Austria, Argentina and Australia. The concert
had 60 people on one stage. On Sunday, they performed at ‘The Ketevan Cantata’
by Vasco Negreiros. They presented a Cantata especially composed for the
Ketevan Festival by the 2017resident composer Maestro Vasco Negreiros from
Portugal. The original piece combined an Indian Ensemble with a Western
Ensemble and they performed in Sanskrit, Hindi and Latin along with Vandalia,
Spain and other international musicians,” adds Santiago. Goa University will
also perform the concluding concert for the festival.
This
weekend will have six concerts beginning on February 16 with Viola Da Gamba and
Traverso -La Princesse et le Rossignol concert by Sofia Diniz and Joanna Amorim
(Portugal) which will be performed at Penha da Franca Church at 7pm. Karl
Luchtmayer (UK) will perform on February 17 at St Monica Convent, Old Goa at
6:45pm followed by a Ketevan Production, From Hildegard to Cage Candlelight
Concert at 7:45pm. On February 18, Songs of Kindness and The Four Elements will
be performed by Helena Marinho and Vasco Negreiros and Indo-Portuguese Ensemble
at 6:45pm. The Sacrality of Fado will be performed by Sonia Shirsat (India) and
Intercultural Ensemble on February 18 at 7:45pm at St Monica Convent, Old Goa.
The concluding concert will be The Routes of Faith and Sorrow by GU Choir and
Ensemble, conducted by Santiago L Girelli on February 19 at 7pm at St Monica
Convent, Old Goa.
