Leaving them all in their wake

It is a game that involves tossing a concave plastic disc designed for skimming through the airat very high speed. This disc will spin and at times have a mind all its own. And the general idea is to catch it before it settles on the floor. It is a very pacy sport and one requires to be very fit to play it at any level. Now imagine representing your country in the masters and also having the pleasure of watching your children represent the country in age specific categories, it can make one feel quite proud.
Charmaine Godinho one time beauty queen and now full time mother will represent the country in the world master ultimate championship masters category to be held on the Gold Coast in Australia in September.  Her daughter Rebecca 18 will represent the country in the Netherlands and Wynona 15 in Sweden in July. Now with the virus having struck everything ofcourse is on hold.
What is Ultimate Frisbee you might ask.  Ultimate Frisbee (shortened to just Ultimate) is a team sport that is best described as a team sport which is a cross between Basketball and Football, with a flying disk (or Frisbee) as a substitute for the ball. It is defined as “a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc (Frisbee)” which was developed in 1968 by a group of students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. What makes this sport unique is that even at league and championship levels, the game is ‘self-officiating’ relying on the players to call their own fouls and settle disputes. The game however does have official ‘observers’ that act as a third umpire of sorts when called upon.
Charmaine has always been very athletic and still plays tennis every other day.  Her daughters would also whack the yellow ball in anger along with their mother. But one day the siblings dropped out of tennis. Charmaine noticed her kids chasing a frisbee on the fields and catching them expertly. The fact they had inherited the speed of their mother helped them tremedously in the sport. As Chairmaine puts it rather casually ” We are all sprinters”.
The game they are playing is contested by two teams each comprising seven players. The frisbee is thrown at insane speed and one has to catch it with one hand. Agility and endurance is very important because each match is contested over 100 or 120 minutes. Height helps which all three possess in ample measure. when asked what their expectations were Charmaine said Wynona who is the captain of the u-20 team had great sporting ability and it would be nice if she would be recognised bythe world federation as a player of great promise. She has also played basketball and functions as a point guard. Rebecca is also a runner and won a silver medal over 400 metres in a state championship. She is considered a very safe player with very sure hands. Charmaine would like to enhance her reputation as a finisher a role which requires her to score goals. At the Asian championship held in Japan last year, she was the highest goal scorer. She says” As one gets older it pays to play smarter, one cannot be running all over the ground and tiring oneself out”.
The ladies have made their mark in a sport that has caught the fancy of the country and there are over 120 teams all over the country. The state will watch with much interest as they step on to the field to represent the country at the highest level.
