Narana Coissoró feted on 90th birthday

Casa de Goa, Lisbon, was the stage for an initiative that brought together friends of the former MP of the CDS-PP and vice-president of the Portuguese Parliament Narana Coissoró on his 90th birthday where he was awarded an insignia of an honorary order, the fourth he has received.

This time, it was the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction, which he received at the hands of former deputy and leader of the CDS-PP, Ribeiro e Castro.

“Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic and Grand Master of the Honorific Orders, makes it known that under the terms of the respective law, and by license dated October 3, 2021, he grants Professor Dr Narana Sinai Coissoró the degree of Grand Cross of the Instruction”, Public refers to the permit.

Speaking after receiving the award, Coissoró said, “Although I recognise that what I have done in life deserves to be recorded, I believe there is something important that I must thank everyone for. I found in this country, as it is now said in Portugal, my country. Portugal, my noble friends, gave me everything, they gave me what they give to their children, their people, their loved ones. All the avenues were opened for me, and if I wasn’t able to walk through them all, it’s my fault, it’s neither of the country nor of the Portuguese society.”

He added, “The Portuguese people, viewed from the eastern side, are a wonderful people, wonderful because they bring with them a heritage of many cultures and civilizations cemented that make us the Portugal that we are. And this natural or acquired Portugueseness is one of the wonderful things in our world. Portugal is in fact the great country, the great aggregator of various cultures, from African, Amerindian, North American, South Asian cultures and that everything is a little bit where the Portugueseness of Portugal was formed. It is an honor for me to belong to this country. The country of all of us.”

He thanked all present saying, “Thank you very much for this honour, to one who served Portuguese culture and is a true Portuguese. Thank you very much.”

He stressed, moved, in front of the guests at this lunch, which brought together, among family and friends, the State Councilors António Lobo Xavier and Leonor Beleza.
