His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was an accomplished artist whose work included a portrait of Donald Trump used for The Art of the Deal, and she also produced several of her husband’s films. The couple were known supporters of liberal political causes, and Rob Reiner was a long-time critic of Donald Trump, whose comments following their deaths sparked widespread outrage. Rob and their son Nick Reiner had earlier collaborated on a 2015 film, which was based on struggles with addiction and homelessness. According to people familiar with the situation, tensions were evident the evening before the killings, when Rob and Nick Reiner were reportedly heard arguing at a Christmas party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. Nick Reiner was said to have behaved disruptively at the gathering, making guests uncomfortable, while his parents appeared upset and embarrassed and expressed concern about his health. Nick Reiner, 32, who was later arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, had spoken openly about addiction and rehabilitation since he was 15 and had been living on and off at his parents’ Brentwood home, according to one person familiar with the family. The killings have reverberated across Hollywood, drawing an outpouring of tributes from public figures and close friends, including former US president Barack Obama, who said the Reiners “lived lives defined by purpose.” In a statement, Obama noted, “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” adding, “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
