Nuts about doughnuts

With doughnuts being all the rage in Goa, Café speaks to a few youngsters on the occasion of Doughnut Day and analyses how it is about more than a ring of flour fried in hot oil, and asks young Goa what they look forward to in their doughnut

For most in the world, the attempt at not being cynical
about days dedicated to certain concepts can be rather trying. They tend to be
the brainchildren of people who benefit financially from the success of the theme
in question. For instance, gift shops benefit on Valentine’s Day, just as fireworks
vendors do during festivals. However, some days can move even the most jaded of
souls, and Doughnut Day is one such example. Celebrated on the first Friday of
the month of June, its origins go back to 1938, to commemorate the people
behind the food rather than the food itself.

Fast forward to 2015, and we
investigate how doughnuts make the Goan world go round. Alexandra Menezes, a
student from Panjim learning to ply her trade in the hospitality sector, shares
her views, saying, “My love for doughnuts started when I had one of those
sinful little creatures from Bakers Street in Porvorim. I’ve always loved their
variety over the larger doughnut chains. The double chocolate doughnut they
offer is my absolute favourite, nothing beats it! My idea of a perfect doughnut
is a simple one; it has to be crispy enough to still be a doughnut, and topped
with white chocolate, before being glazed with hot chocolate and sprinkles.”

Another student from Porvorim, Danesh Engineer, echoes these
sentiments and speaks on his dream doughnut, saying, “Doughnuts are loved and
favoured by almost all. They can be eaten as dessert or even as an evening
snack. It isn’t hard to see why they are loved: they are love in a bun. My
favourite would have to be a blueberry swirl with a powdered-sugar coating,
just plain addictive! My idea of the perfect doughnut would have to be one
which is perfectly glazed and crispy, while being greeted by warm caramel
within. I’m hoping to see that in reality!”

Café speaks to
several other youngsters on the doughnut of their dreams and listens in to what
they have to say:

My obsession for doughnuts started during my school days
when I’d gobble down one daily. The number grew until it was a box of 8-10
shared among two friends. As time passed, travelling by bus meant having a box
for the way back home! Yes, its decadent, but what can you do! My favourite
would have to be the regular original chocolate doughnut! – Karl D’Souza, Porvorim

My love for doughnuts started when I was a child, going out
with family. Instead of a dinner meal, I’d beg for doughnuts. Colour fascinates
me, and so all the colourful doughnuts had my undivided attention. Chocolate,
sprinkles, frosting, peanut butter chips… all so tempting. I absolutely adore
the Nutella doughnut found at Marc Brown. – Althea Viegas, Parra

My love for doughnuts started in Dubai about a year back;
I’d had the strawberry and Swiss cheese truffle at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Dubai.
BEST THING EVER! The contrasting tang of the strawberry and the Swiss cheese
were a delight and absolutely playful on the taste buds. – Dwayne Dowling,
Porvorim
