‘Sur Jahan’
– The World Peace Music Festival, organised by banglanatak dot com in
association with the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa will take place on February 7, 8 and 9, 2018 at Kala Academy, Panjim.
This year, the three-day peace music festival will bring about a
convergence of ideas on harmony, peace and divinity through the seven acts that
will be performing at the festival. The festival aims at connecting Indian folk
artistes to the world through cultural exchange. Besides
the live performances, the festival caters to educating the audience through
the numerous workshops. The musical acts include Atse Tewodros Project, Cheikh
Lo, Muzsikas, Muzykanci, Tuuletar, Nizami Khusro Brothers and Bengal Goa
Musical Ensemble.

Born in
Ethiopia and brought up in Italy, Gabriella Ghermandi grew up in a world full
of different sounds like Ethiopian, Italian, Congolese and Indian. In an attempt
to bring together Ethiopian and Italian musicians to foster mutual dialogue and
artistic creation, she formed the Atse Tewodros Project. Their album ‘Ethiopia
Celebrating Emperor Tewodros II’ was also in the ballot for the 59th Grammy
Awards in two categories. They will be performing in Goa on February 9 at 6pm
and the workshop will be held on February 8 at 11:30am.
Hailing
from the Francophone country of Burkina Faso in West Africa, Cheikh Lo’s music
is a mix of mbalax, reggae and soukous influences. He was awarded the WOMEX
Lifetime Award in 2015. He will be performing on February 8 at 8pm and will be
conducting a workshop on February 9 at 11:30am.
Bringing
Hungary’s folk music to global limelight, Muzsikas will be performing at Sur
Jahan on February 7 at 8pm followed by their workshop on February 8 at 10:30am. The
four-member band often combines
traditional Hungarian folk music with the classical compositions of Bartok,
Kodaly, Kurtag and many others. Their music pieces have also featured in movies
like ‘The English Patient’, ‘Music Box’ and ‘Only Yesterday’. The ensemble will
be accompanied by two guests, Hanga Kacsó, singer and István Berecz, dancer.
One of the
most original folk bands in the Polish music world, Muzykanci will be
performing on February 8 at 7pm and their workshop will be held at
February 9 at 10:30am. Muzykanci has been consistently
experimenting and making versions of Polish folk songs from various Polish,
Lemko, Hungarian, Balkan, Gypsy and Jewish tunes.
Tuuletar
from Finland will be performing on February 7 at 7pm and the workshop will be
conducted on February 8 at 12:30pm. This vocal performance group is formed
by four diverse women from Finland. From American Hip Hop to South Asian folk,
Tuuletar takes inspiration from all kinds of music and pioneers the genre
of Vocal Folk Hop.
Nizami
Khusro Brothers from Delhi will be performing on February 9 at 7pm.
Among the families which have carried on Qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional
music, are the Nizami Khusro Brothers who head the Qawwal Bachhe and Delhi
Gharana. Led by Saqlain Nizami, this group is well versed and can perform in
several languages, such as Arabic, Persian,
Hindi, Urdu, etc. They have total mastery over various genres of classical
music, such as Dhrupad, Khayal, Tarana, Thumri and Dadra, which they blend
beautifully with Qawwali. This family has been singing Qawwalis for the last
eight centuries and is famous for their performances in India.
Bengal Goa
Musical Ensemble will be performing on February 8 at 6pm and they
will conduct a workshop on February 9 at 12:30pm. A
collaboration between musicians from Bengal and Goa, Bengal Goa Musical
Ensemble has released three music albums in the last four years. The beauty of
this ensemble is that Folks of Bengal is represented by both urban and rural
traditional folk musicians covering various forms of music, including Bhawaiya,
Baul and Jhumur.
