‘Point’, a
tiatr written and directed by Alfredo
Fernandes and presented by Alfi Art Productions focuses on ageing parents
abandoned by children and their plight thereafter.
The story revolves around Juze (Alfredo Fernandes), who is hard
at hearing, and his spouse Rosita (Tracila Gonsalves). Their only son, Dreg
(Keegan D’Costa), has settled abroad with his wife and son, leaving the ageing couple
to fend for themselves.
Before their health can deteriorate, Juze tells his wife that
they should register themselves at a home for the aged. Rosita agrees and
accepts Juze’s suggestion gracefully. She mentions about the bank account,
balance and depositing of cash. News about depositing of cash is overheard by
Gilu (Diptesh Harmalkar), who is a carpenter by profession and is entrusted
with the task of taking care of the house and property by Dreg.
Greed for money prompts Gilu to leak this news to Raposo
(Eleuterio da Costa), who is known for cheating others, including his own aged
mother. When Rosita visits the bank, plans are worked out to steal the
deposited cash. Gilu bribes HDFC (Mathew de Souza), who works in the bank, and
collects all the required information.
After the death of her husband, where does Rosita move to? How
does Raposo convince and win the heart of Rosita? Will his wicked plans work in
his favour? How his the truth revealed and from whose mouth? At the end, who
are the winners and losers?
Tiatr ‘Point’ has
various points to make in various contexts, but the first half moves at a
snail’s pace. There are developments taking place in the second half, but the
entire show fell short of audience’s expectations.
As the ageing couple,
Alfredo and Tracila give a fine performance, with the former exceptionally
good. They are ably assisted by Eleuterio and Arantxa, with the former in
villain’s robes. Aushmin Dias as a teenager delivers his dialogues confidently.
Diptesh is apt as a carpenter. Gigi as a nun, Keegan, Terence and other
artistes have extended good support with brief entries.
Mathew de Souza as
HDFC and Aveena Pereira as Susegad entertain in the comic acts inside the bank
premises and at the residence. But the laughter pills provided by them appeared
too mild for a laughter riot among the audience.
In the category of
songs, solos by Annalee Menezes, Cielda Pereira, Frenzie Rodrigues, Ansley
Ratos and Diptesh Harmalkar, a duo by Avina and Oshina, a duet by Gigi and
Diptesh, a quintet by Flannon, Holly, Ciano, Jovienne and Kimberley and the
opening and concluding chorals were appealing to the ears.
The
stage sets by Freddy Ferrao, light designs by Baltazar, besides the background
music by Lenoy Gomendes deserve appreciation. Senon D’Souza and his team, with
inclusion of tenor sax and trombone, provided good music
