The Herald report on João Leão Fernandes being appointed the
next finance minsiter of Portugal found space in the Portuguese media. News
agency Lusa and the newspaper Diario de Noticias picked
up the report and began its copy quoting the Herald article, headlining their
report to say that Goa takes pride in the appointment of the new minister.
“The oldest newspaper in Goa, O Heraldo, reports on page one of
its Thursday edition the Goan origins of João Leão…” the report states and goes
on to quote further from the Herald. It quotes Herald on the grandfather and
father of João Leão and goes further to speak to Goans in Portugal and Goa on
the signficance of the appointment to Goa.
It also speaks of persons who knew Prof Leão Fernandes the
grandfather of the new minister and Claudio Fernandes, João Leão’s father who
now lives in Portugal. It quotes Aurobindo
Xavier, president of the Lusophone Society of Goa saying, “Imagine having three ministers from your land here in the
Government of Lisbon, wouldn’t you be happy?”
Another person quoted is Eduardo Fonseca, Panjim based doctor
who speak on the grandfather who was his teacher at the Lyceum.
It refers also to the facebook page ‘Galeria de Goeses Ilustres’
(Illustrious Goans’ Gallery) that picked up on the appointment.
