In the
start-up world, one tends to hear about several interesting and path-breaking ideas that could change
and shape the future of a particular industry. Goa’s Denise Almeida, a 5th year
student of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research,
Puducherry, has come up with one such innovative idea that won her the first
place at the Student Entrepreneurship Idea & Start up Competition 2018.
So what was Denise’s idea? Well, it’s
called a BioStamp. “In a dynamic world of science and technology, the numerous
instances of human-animal conflicts led me to the idea of monitoring the health
of animals in the wild. Methods of conservation, such as sanctuaries, national
parks, zoos, etc, have always existed, but apart from protecting them,
monitoring their health is equally important. That’s where the idea of applying
electronic tattoos to these animals stems from. Learning when there is even a
slightest change in the vital parameters that could lead to disease or death of
the individual could give us an advantage in quick remedy of the situation and
thus increase the quality of health care,” says Denise, a budding entrepreneur
and ardent animal lover.
“Bio stamps are currently being developed for people serving in
the army and we can adapt this technology for veterinary use, not only to help
preserve the wild population but also monitor sick and ailing pets,” she adds.
Denise hails from Panjim, Goa and is the daughter of Sebastian
and Angela Almeida. She was a student of Indian School, Wadi Kabir, Muscat and
Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Panjim.
“Denise has made everyone proud. From the institutions she has
studied at, to her teachers and friends, especially her entire family, as she
is the first Goan to win this Competition,” says Sebastian, her father.
The
award was presented by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Government of
Puducherry, M O H F Shahjahan, in the presence of high ranking officials of
their government and the Pondicherry University. The competition was held
