Ronaldo keeps Goa’s Euro interest alive

It was possibly the most entertaining match of the tournament so far and thankfully Portugal was able to come through unscathed after drawing with world champions France. Now they face Belgium in the round of 16 and fans in Goa, who still refer to Portugal as “we”, have much to say

Portugal has made it to the last 16 and will face Belgium next. A big test for them as they will face Belgium So far they have fared well into the tournament after having lost to the Germans, a win versus Hungary and a draw last night against France. They created a lot of chances but did not capitalize. They need to capitalize on every chance they get and if they do that then they’ll go even deeper into the tournament. On the other hand the legend CR7 now has the joint most number of international goals and he’s just getting better and better with age. Bruno didn’t start yesterday but he has to start every game especially in crunch and crucial games. He’s the X factor of the team. – Kunal Kunkolienkar, Margao

Portugal has made it to the round of 16 the hard way. Though they began the campaign on a high, they never found it easy to get past the likes of Germany and France in ‘The Group of Death’. Renato Sanches and Cristiano Ronaldo, the only standout players in the game against France, shows how much this Portuguese team needs to improve. We need to be defensively strong and offensively clinical in order to beat Belgium in what will be an end to end encounter in Seville. – Vaughan D’Souza, Navelim

To be fair Portugal did pretty well In the group of death and a win against one of the best sides in the competition, Belgium will really signal our intent to defend our crown, so yeah, pretty confident going into the next round – Eric D’Souza, Panjim

It’s gonna be very exciting and tough but Portugal will advance to the round of 16 … Portugal have CR7 “the goal machine” – Elesban Mascarenhas, Vasco-da-gama

The next match for Portugal won’t be easy because they meet another pre-tournament favourites in Belgium. Goa’s favourite team will have to pull up your socks especially in defence particularly Semedo to upset Belgium and move ahead in the tournament. If they can clear this hurdle, then the path to the finals will be very easy. – Omi Tunes, Vasco

It was a brilliant game of football by Portugal after a disastrous performance against Germany. Their defence stood resilient in the first half but was outdone due to a soft penalty call. Portugal will now face a formidable Belgium side who are firing on all cylinders and have beaten all their opponents in the group stage. This match will be the best matchup of the round of 16. A very good performance from Portugal will seal their chances of reaching the quarters if not they will be crashing out. – Shashwat Kamat, Porvorim

We Goans love football and Portugal is our favourite team. It was very difficult to see them lose against Germany the other day but against France, they did a very good recovery and despite some dubious penalty calls, we survived to fight another day. I know that Belgium will start as clear favourites but if you can remember, even during the last edition of the tournament Portugal qualified as one of the 3rd placed teams and went on to lift the cup. I personally think that if we can beat Belgium then no one can stop us from lifting the cup once again. #VivaPortugal #VivaGoa #VamosGoa. – Damiao Fernandes, Calangute

Portugal haven’t had the greatest performances so far and their defence looked really vulnerable vs Germany, however, it was a better performance vs France. Belgium is one of the strongest teams and definitely a favourite to win the Euros, if Portugal can be solid at the back and can play as a team rather than as 11 individuals they have a chance of going through. – Mark Valadares, Panjim
