Social media soldiers are taking on China, but will it do any good?

The death of Indian soldiers during the exchange of fire with Chinese soldiers has angered the country. There is a campaign to boycott Chinese products gaining momentum in the country. Clips of people destroying Chinese products and throwing their television out of their houses on the third and fourth floors have been posted. The question however remains is if this is the way to protest against Chinese aggression or is it an attempt by some people to get their fifteen minutes of fame in the digital space. Café spoke to people across Goa to understand their sentiment

The emotions being whipped up against Chinese goods and services is one thing, but the real global geopolitical game that is being played out makes for some very tough choices for India. If we play our cards right, the whole world is with us! The anti-Chinese sentiment has been brewing for a long time. Way before this specific border issue. It’s just that their goods are cheap and so keeps so many people hooked, not just in India but in many developing countries. For many countries in Africa and Latin America and South Asia including our neighbours Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, there is no alternative– Rajesh Jog Director Saltwater Associates

Breaking Chinese products and calls for the ban on anything related to China are completely devoid of any logic. The problems at the border are a result of the Centre’s failure to maintain diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries. I’m not saying China is right here, but neither is India. If frustrations have to be focussed anywhere, they should be directed at the Prime Minister, Home Minister and anyone else involved in dialogue or back-channeling with China– Kurt Bento Communication Consultant

I really think this growing movement toward uninstalling Chinese made apps, boycotting Chinese goods, and considering that behavior “patriotic” is misguided and myopic. Worse, it represents a growing jingoism in Indian society that is detrimental overall to the fabric of democracy. When the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co won an Indian government contract this week despite bidding a mere 3% lower than India based L&T, it laid bare the hypocrisy and futility inherent in these periodic bouts of protectionism. Anybody feeling good about themselves for uninstalling a few Chinese apps should keep in mind that their action is really a drop in the ocean. Further, their attempts are being nullified in real-time by actions taken by the government of the very country they hope to honor with these boycotts- Jason Fernandes (Founder, TokenJay.TV)

Most of those venting on FB will be the 1st to buy Chinese products because of the price. These are social media experts who crave attention but personally will not change buying behaviour. Crackers from China are preferred as Sivakasi ones are expensive. I hear that even Ganapathi idols of POP come from China. Or toys? Not to mention cheap and good electronics. Who buys branded when cheap Chinese products are available. Indian alternatives are available but then Indians are price sensitive.  So venting on FB or social media is their time for fame, but difficult to practice- Bharat Kamat, Chairman at Indian Green Building Council Goa Chapter

I am deeply hurt and anguished on the as 20 brave hearts were martyred Indian soldiers in eastern Ladakh. Now the time has come that we must boycott the Chinese Products completely to give a befitting reply to destroy Chinese economy- Sidharth Mehta,  Business manNavelim

I feel we should break their economy only then they will really how big a and important market India has been for them. We should stop all imports of mobile phones and other electronic items from China and instead ask the companies to set up manufacturing plants in India itself– Shubham Faldessai , Quepem Self employed

The government of India as the first step should cancel all projects which are given to Chinese agencies which will be the first step towards concrete action without firing a bullet– Maria Barreto , Self Employed Candolim

We Indians will have to ensure that we give them a heavy price and the best start is uninstall all Chinese Apps, also we should start a campaign which boosts Indian start-up companies to destroy Chinese products – Nikhil Maruti Ghatekari. Student Davorlim
