Nestled
in the busy street of Candolim, Southi is the answer to all your cravings for South Indian cuisine. Southi
brings a whole new dimension to the cuisine; yes, you will get the regular
masala dosa to relish but then there is the Mutton Kheema Dosa as well, which
will make you fall in love with dosas all over again. There also are idlis and
a great variety of them, but then there is the Hyderabadi Pepper Tikka, which
represents the hidden gem dishes from across the Southern belt. Southi is not
just food, but a culinary delight.
In fact, subtle yet classy decor, a wonderfully hospitable staff
and scrumptious food is what sets Southi apart from its other contemporaries.
The meals usually begin with a refreshing glass of Sol Kadhi and
nothing can replace those unique flavours of coconut milk and kokum. While you
sip this amazing cold drink, don’t miss the tangy and spicy Rasam to balance
out the flavours.
For starters, try the Crispy Basa and Hyderabadi Pepper Tikka.
They have almost all the Kebab options in veg as well and hence the vegetarians
too can try these wonderful marinades.
The Crispy Basa was as crispy as it can get, in fact we can
easily say that the batter and frying was so well done that even a mediocre
fish like basa tasted great. Mild flavours and spices otherwise but the
crispness did all the magic.
The Pepper Tikka on the other hand was slightly spicy but
flavourful; peppers marinated with cheese and cream made it extremely tender
and delicious at the same time.
Following the service
staff’s recommendation, we opted for Mutton Kheema Dosa and Kadi Patta Chicken
with Appam for main course and trust us when we say that both these dishes will
blow your mind away. The crispy dosa stuffed with a nicely done mutton kheema
makes you think if you are really having a dosa. It tastes so different that
the need for Sambhar and Chutneys is reduced to negligible; the dosa in itself
is more than enough.
The Kadi Patta
Chicken, as the name suggests, was a chicken dish prepared with kadi patta, a
spice that usually defines the Southern Cuisine. The thick aromatic gravy
tasted just perfect with the soft and fluffy appams.
The desserts at
Southi are a steal deal and you simply cannot afford to miss them. The Yelneer
Payasam almost melts in the mouth; the tender coconut and milk with that
sweetness leave you asking for more.
Another
dish that turned out to be the hero of the meal was the Akrot Halwa. Words
can’t really justify the beautiful texture and taste of this walnut halwa; you
have to try it to believe, it’s so so good.
