There
are approximately 90000 stray dogs in Goa. The solution is sterilizing. This
will only work if Panchayats and the municipality work with more enthusiasm
with existing ngos. Also Goa needs more NGO’s to be set up. The existing NGO’s
cannot cope with sterilizing so many dogs.

As a pet mom, active rescue and rehabilitation of dog meat trade
survivors here in Cambodia and as a business owner both in Goa and Cambodia, I
think the community needs to take more responsibility and an active part in
helping solve the problem. It all cannot be just left up to the government
because it’s not just a government issue. The world belongs to the voiceless animals
as much as it belongs to us as human beings and we need to be more
accommodating, tolerant and considerate to these strays. People should be more
open to adoption instead of “must wanting” to buy a specific breed. Every
panchayat should be more supportive to feeders, rescuers and all those who are
reaching out to want to help.

We need
to have local sterilization camps. Now it is being done by private bodies which
are sponsored by individuals. Sterilization is the only way forward. We cannot
kill dogs found on the roads. Euthanasia is not the solution.

A lot of people that
I have met in Goa, who keep dogs or maybe even feed strays, refuse to get them
sterilised for a multitude of reasons, which to me make no sense. A lot of them
who keep them as pets, the minute their dogs have puppies, they will just
abandon them somewhere, which leads to even more un-sterilised strays. Catching
them and killing them is definitely not the solution. If the government really
wants to do something, then they should create awareness about getting your
pets spayed. And then the government should provide free sterilisation for all
these pets of lower income families. And lastly, they should start getting all
pet owners to maybe get their pets registered, make pet breeding and selling
illegal, and maybe if they really have to, then give free space, provide
funding to animal shelters.
