Taking food to the streets

As Goa’s culinary sphere grows ever so more diverse, Café looks into one street in particular that has burst into life in this regard

Goa is synonymous with
good living, and good living is
synonymous with good food.
Goa’s diverse culture and plenty
of visiting guests (and foreign
residents alike) have seen the food
sector expand in a host of ways,
with a culinary explosion in all
areas seeing a spike of sorts. In
more recent times, one area that
has been the veritable nucleus of
the culinary revolution in the state
is none other than Chogm Road.
Starting from Porvorim, running
almost all the way to Calangute,
this road is one of the busiest in
the state. And its Porvorim end has
seen many new places to eat throw
open their doors in anticipation
of a receptive audience. Café
looks into this little trend, and
while there may be many others,
highlights some of these eateries.
ANGELS RESORT
Angels Resort is a 3-Star hotel that serves as an
ideal pit-stop for travellers on the highway. It has
a multicuisine restaurant situated on the CHOGM
Road on the Panjim-Calangute stretch. What the
restaurant itself boasts of is how its low-end pricing
makes it a much sought-after dining area in North
Goa.
MOKI BAR+KITCHEN
Moki Bar+Kitchen is a relatively new rooftop
restaurant on Chogm Road, between the village of
Sangolda and Porvorim, that has already got swarms
of salivating foodies turning up at its doors. Serving
delicious specialties from all around the country
and beyond, a meal here is accompanied by the
panoramic view of the scenery, which is simply
spectacular.
DANDEY’S STEAKHOUSE
This quiet establishment is located in the backyard
of Hotel Picnic Plaza on the Chogm Road. Over
time, it’s been a place known for its steaks and a
little controversy. Some love it, others hate it, but all
the same, the fact that it’s been around for a while
suggests that the food must definitely be palatable.
This is another place to look out for, if moderate
pricing is a prerequisite for you. It also dishes out
decent seafood.
YAKI ZUSHI
Yaki Zushi, despite being right on the highway itself,
is a blink-and-you-miss-it type of establishment. The
food here is, by and large, exceptional. The sushi is
to die for, as are the ramen dishes and the crab fried
rice. The brainchild of Amory D’Souza who worked
at handling the sushi counter for Vivanta by Taj in
Panjim, this place has taken a pricey dish like sushi
and placed it within the reach of the common man’s
spending power.
ICEBERG
Dying to try out those pan ice cream roll-ups like the
videos on social media depict? Then there’s finally
a place in Goa where you can: Iceberg. Apart from
working on a cold slab though, the outlet does also
have sundaes and a variety of interesting flavours,
such as Horlicks.
THE ROOSTER
In 2012, The Rooster started its first outlet in Goa.
Its focus is working with fried chicken and Arabian
dishes, and offers a viable alternative to other
popular fast food brands that offer the same.
ON THE GO
This place features a quick service format that is
unparalleled in many ways, as are the neatly handwritten
menus, displays of the take-away foods and
open kitchen concept. On The Go has a series of
quick bites, including gourmet sandwiches, and is
probably the only place in Goa that offers a Tocino
Del Cielo, which is effectively a coconut flan.
